Village Park Under Construction |
In February, 2010, with the help of Goreville Schools superintendent, Dr. Steve Webb, the village was awarded a grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Open Space Land Acquisition and Development Program (OSLAD), to make the project possible. Oddly enough, this was the same grant utilized by the Ruralitans back in the early 1990s to first develop the village park.
Phase 1 of the village park expansion, the skate park, has been completed. It consists of multiple pre-cast concrete ramps, boxes, and rails. The skate park has proved to be a grand addition to the park for local children.
As the construction continues, it is easy to see how proud residents are of our expansion and park. The expansion will include: replacing old playground equipment with new safer handicap accessible equipment, redeveloping the former tennis court into a multipurpose basketball/tennis court, which will include more area for basketball, the expansion of additional parking, as well as the fourth and largest phase of the project being the development of the northwest corner of the park into a youth league soccer/football field.
In fact, the construction for the soccer/football field began to take shape early this week. The land was readied for fly ash, which will be burried under the field. The fly ash will then be covered with a foot or two of top soil to ensure a level field.
Goreville is expanding and with that expansion, is a hometown we can be proud of. A hometown that encourages all types of sports and provides a safe place for our children to play. |

"Home of the Free because of the Brave"
Goreville's Freedom Fest proved to be a huge success! The community came together to celebrate the freedom that we all have and to salute our military. The events of the day included a car show, concerts, a fireman contest, and the parade. Of course, there were many more festivities throughout the day- which was a celebration but also a fund raiser for Stuff the Bus. Over $1000 was raised during the day to assist the Stuff the Bus Committee in purchasing school supplies for our local school. The program, now in it's second year, has proved to be such an asset to the community that the 4th of July Committee voted to have all proceeds from the Freedom Fest go to Stuff the Bus.
Locals enjoyed the festivities, including a concert by Lou Jetton and 61 South and of course the grand finale of the day was our breathtaking fireworks.
The 4th of July Committee and community are already making plans to expand the festivities for next year. As Dusty Lingle stated during his News Channel 3 interview (attachment below), "Our celebration is in some ways like a family reunion." Yes, to our community, the highlight of the year is our 4th of July celebration- honoring our freedom and those who provide it while also enjoying good food, company, and festivities.
HAPPY 4th of JULY GOREVILLE! |
