GOREVILLE BLACKCAT ATHLETICS ADDS FOOTBALL AND VOLLEYBALL!!!

For the first time in the history of Goreville High School, football and volleyball will be offered as a sport to Goreville High School students in 2009-2010!  After five years of planning and negotiations, the Goreville Board of Education approved a cooperative agreement with Vienna High School to allow our students to participate in their new football program.  They also approved starting Volleyball as a Junior Varsity Program in 2009-2010 and then a full program with a Varsity in 2010-2011.  If you have any questions about the programs, please contact Todd Tripp, Athletic Director at 995-2142.  


SEC ALL-CONFERENCE BASEBALL/SOFTBALL

The South Egyptian Conference released its All-Conference Baseball and Softball teams and Goreville High School has 10 players honored this year!  For the Boys Baseball Team, Tyler Shadowens, Casey Rautenstrauch, and Nick Andros were named First Team while Kyle Harner and Jeremy Smith were named Second Team All-Conference.  For the Girls Softball Team, Shelbey Miller, Jodie Wright, and Kelsey Merchant were named First Team while Cayla Harner and Hannah Hudson were named Second Team All-Conference.  Tyler Shadowens and Shelbey Miller were both runners-up to the Conference MVP!  

Congratulations Blackcats!!!  We are proud of you!!!


BLACKCATS FALL IN SECTIONALS 
For the fifth straight year, the Goreville Blackcat Baseball Team won the IHSA Regional Championship but could not make it past Sectionals.  The Blackcats defeated Crab Orchard at the Illinois High School Association Regional Tournament hosted by Goreville High School 5-4 to claim the title.  The Cats then were defeated by Shawnee High School 4-2 at the IHSA Sectional Tournament to end their season.

HUDSON SIGNS WITH SHAWNEE

Senior Goreville Lady Blackcat Hannah Hudson signed a national letter of intent to play softball next year at Shawnee Comunity College in Ullin.  The senior was named All-Conference in the South Egyptian Conference during her junior and senior years.  Hudson was a 4 year starter for the Lady Cats with a career batting average of .214.  She had 98 hits of which 40 were for extra bases.  She is the daughter of Rick and Lisa Hudson of Goreville.

DARNELL AND BROWN BREAK SIC TRACK RECORDS AND WIN AT STATE!!!

Goreville Junior High 7th grader Haley Darnell broke records in the girls 100 and 200 meter dash respectively and Colton Brown broke the record in the boys 200 meter at the Southern Illini Conference Track Meet held at Anna-Jonesboro High School.  The Goreville Girls Track Team won the SIC Conference Meet behind the record 1st Places by Darnell, 1st Place in Shotput and the 800 meter run by Alison Webb, and 1st Place in the mile run by Jessica Wright!  The Goreville Boys Track Team placed 3rd in the Meet. Darnell and Brown also placed first in the 100 meter dash at the IJHSAA State Tournament held at Salem High School.

Congratulations Haley and Colton and both Goreville Track Teams!!!  We are proud of you!!!

GOREVILLE JR. BLACKCAT ALL-STARS

Several Goreville Jr. Blackcat basketball players were chosen as All-Stars for the Southern Illini Conference due to their outstanding seasons!  For the Jr. Cats Alex Andros, Dayton Tripp, and Colton Brown were selected.  For the Jr. Lady Cats, Taylor Odom, Haley Darnell, Jessie Wright, and Alison Webb were chosen.   

Congratulations All-Stars!!!  We are proud of you!!! 


HOOD SIGNS WITH SOUTHWESTERN IL COLLEGE

Senior Goreville Lady Blackcat Brittany Hood signed a national letter of intent to play basketball next year at Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC) in Belleville.  The senior was named All-South, IBCA Special Mention All-State, AP Honorable Mention All-State and the MVP of the South Egyptian Conference and the Eldorado Holiday Tournament.  Hood led Southern Illinois in scoring for most of the season ending at 21.9 points per game and shooting a staggering 51.9% from the field.  She scored 1,175 points in her high school career leading the Lady Blackcats to an SEC conference championship.  Hood chose SWIC over finalists Missouri Baptist, Olney Central, Lakeland and Shawnee.  She is the daughter of Mike and Laura Hood of Goreville.

GOREVILLE WYSE TEAM REGIONAL CHAMPS!!

On Tuesday, Mar. 10, 2009, the Goreville High School WYSE (Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering) Team advanced to the sectional competition at SIU!  Three students from the team placed individually and are now eligible for state competition.  Austin Trovillion placed 2nd in Engineering Graphics, and Ryan Reigstad and Tim Coffey both placed 2nd in Computer Fundamentals.  On April 9, 2009 they will be competing at the University of Illinois in Champaign for possible state placement.

JR. LADY CATS FALL AT STATE

The Jr. Lady Blackcats lost in overtime to Woodlawn at the SIJHSAA State Tournament last Friday.  The Jr. Lady Cats, who beat Jonesboro then Shawnee en route to their third consecutive IJHSAA Regional Championship Title, could not overcome foul trouble in the state game held at Rend Lake College.  The Jr. Lady Cats end their season at 23-2.  Just click the team picture above for game details in the Marion Daily Republican.

The Southern Illini Conference has released their All-Conference selections and the Goreville Jr. Blackcats and Jr. Lady Cats had 4 players selected from each team!!  For the girls, Alison Webb was selected first-team and the MVP of the conference !  Taylor Odom was also selected to the first-team.  Jessica Wright and Haley Darnell were selected to the second team.  For the boys, Colton Brown and Alex Andros were selected to the first-team while Dayton Tripp and J.T. Russell were named to the second-team.

GOREVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NAMED "CLASS ACT" BY CHANNEL 3
 

Goreville Elementary School was recently highlighted on WSIL TV Channel 3 as one of the region's "Class Acts" in its efforts to promote reading by using an interactive play featuring the children's book "Corduroy"!  The Goreville PTA and Media Center worked together to put on the production for students in Pre-K through 3rd Grade.  Several Goreville High School Beta Club members played roles in the production.  To see the news clip, just click the picture above.

LADY CATS SEC CHAMPS!!!

The Goreville High School Lady Cats Basketball Team went a perfect 6-0 in the South Egyptian Conference to capture the Conference Title!  The Lady Cats finished off the 6-0 run with a rout of Egyptian.  They will play in the Regional Tournament next week at Goreville where they are the 2nd seed.  You can view the article in the Marion Daily Republican by clicking the picture above.

The All Kids program is a program started in 2006 that offers Illinois' uninsured children comprehensive health care that includes doctor's visits, hospital stays, prescription drugs, vision care, dental care and medical devices like eyeglasses and asthma inhalers.
