For the first time in school history, a Goreville High School student, senior Laenya Maze, will graduate from Goreville High School and Shawnee Community College at the same time! Goreville High School's Dual Credit Program allows students to take Advanced Placement/Honors Courses at Goreville High School that correspond to courses offered by Shawnee College and receive credit from both institutions. Currently, Goreville offers 18 college credit hours at the high school and allows eligible students to leave campus early to take escrow classes at Shawnee College. In addition, Goreville also offers courses through a Distance Learning Lab at the high school. Laenya was able to take all of the Goreville classes as well as a full load of escrow courses from Shawnee Community College maintaining "High Honors" in both, and graduate with a high school diploma and her Associates in Arts and Science Degree this May. LADY BLACKCATS BENTON INVITATIONAL CHAMPIONS - RANKED 2ND IN STATE! The Lady Blackcats defeated Sparta, Woodlawn, then Fairfield to take the Benton High School Invitational Softball Tournament Title! Freshman Sydnee Rushing pitched two no-hitters on the day including the Championship game while Junior Taylor Odom continued her power-hitting display by hitting 3 home-runs, including 2 against Woodlawn, to give her 16 home-runs on the season! GOREVILLE PLAYGROUND GETS NEW DESIGN The Goreville Schools playground recently received a gift from former educator Gene Alexander when he volunteered his time, materials and energy to paint the United States map on the playground for our children to play on and learn from!

GOREVILLE HIGH SCHOOL 2012 PROM The Goreville High School Prom ceremonies were held on April 21. The Promenade was at Goreville High School where Rhiannon Pyle was named Prom Queen and Ty Taborn was named Prom King. The dance was then held at Rent One Park, home of the Southern Illinois Miners Baseball Team. The "After Prom" featured a trip to the St. Louis City Musem for all students in attendance. The Goreville High School Bass Fishing Team won the Illinois High School Association Bass Fishing Sectional Tournament held at the Lake of Egypt for the first time in school history! Not only did they take 1st Place, they also took 2nd place which allowed Goreville to send BOTH TEAMS to the IHSA State Tournament in Carlyle! At the State Tournament, Sam Hackman and J.T. Russell took 12th place out of 56 teams while the Sectional Champions Mason Bishop and Jeremy Hudson came in 46th. A special note of appreciation goes out to Coach Messmer and Steve Sanders for the use of their boats throughout the season and also to Mr. Sanders for volunteering his time to help coach our students. FORMER BLACKCAT PARMLEY SETS OVC HITTING STREAK RECORD - 3RD ALL-TIME IN NCAA Former Goreville Blackcat All-Stater Kenton Parmley, now a senior playing for Southeast Missouri State University, has set the hitting streak record for both SEMO AND the Ohio Valley Conference at an incredible 47 games! The streak also lands Kenton at 3rd All-Time in NCAA history! The only two players with a longer streak is former Major League All-Star and current Chicago White Sox Manager Robin Ventura at 58 games and Florida International star Garrett Wittels at 56 games. GOREVILLE SCHOOLS HOSTS "SMART" TECHNOLOGY SHOWCASE On April 23, Goreville C.U.S.D. #1 became the first school in Southern Illinois to host a SMART Experienceevent by SMART Technologies of Chicago "highlighting the school's commitment to providing advanced technology to promote engaged learning." Goreville welcomed representatives from 7 different school districts as well as local community leaders who attended sessions led by Goreville teachers demonstrating the many ways their SMART technology is used in the classrooms to help children learn. The attendees were treated to a meal and four separate sessions including using technology in early education classrooms, using interactive response systems across all grade levels, and using SMART technology to instruct in a high school lab setting. Katie Daugird, Education Solutions Specialist from SMART Technologies, who was on hand for the event and toured the Goreville facility to view how the SMART technology was being used, welcomed the attendees and raffled off a new SMART Document Camera to those in attendance. JIM TERRY MEMORIAL TRIVIA NIGHT A SUCCESS Friday, March 30 was a very successful evening for the Media Center as the Jim Terry Memorial Trivia Night raised over $1,000.00 thanks to 17 generous teams who filled the cafeteria for the event organized by Media Specialist Allison Robison. Jim Terry was a loyal Blackcat fan who recently passed away and who, along with his wife Dixie, had a passion for helping the school in any capacity. ALISON WEBB NAMED BLACK DIAMOND WEST MVP! Goreville High School Junior Alison Webb was named the 2012 MVP of the Black Diamond Conference West in basketball! The 6 foot center for the Lady Blackcats averaged over 18 points and 11 rebounds per game this year. She was also named IBCA All-State 2nd Team, Associated Press Special Mention All-State, Champaign News-Gazette All-State Honorable Mention, All-South, and All-Tournament at the Benton Invitational Tournament and the Eldorado Invitational Tournament. GOREVILLE BLACKCAT SCHOLAR BOWL TEAM REGION #02 CHAMPS!
The Goreville High School Scholar Bowl Team are Region #02 Champions as they placed 1st in the Regional Office of Education 02 Scholar Bowl Tournament on March 8, 2012! There were 12 teams in the tournament. Goreville defeated Joppa 130/65, Vienna 95/85 and finally Anna-Jonesboro High School 145/75 for the title. The team consists of Colin Stone (Tournament MVP with 15 toss-ups), Chisum Kirby, Aaron Brenningmeyer, Conner Seavers, Dakota Vest, Markella Patterson, and Kayce Williams. They finish the season 12-5.

BLACKCATS FALL IN REGIONAL FINALS The Blackcat Basketball Team, ranked 10th overall in Southern Illinois by the Southern Sports, were defeated by Crab Orchard at the IHSA Regional Final held at Crab Orchard High School. The Blackcats, who won the Black Diamond Conference West Championship in their first year in the conference at 11-1 and took 2nd in both the Harrisburg Invitational and the Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament, end their season at 21-8. GOREVILLE WYSE TEAM QUALIFIES FOR SECTIONALS! The Goreville High School Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) Academic Team competed in the Shawnee Community College Regional WYSE Competition and using their 1st in Math (Colin Stone), 3rd in Physics (Laenya Maze/Chism Kirby), Biology (Colin Stone), and Chemistry (Chism Kirby), as well as scores from all of our team members, took 2nd overall in 1A and qualified for the WYSE Sectional Competition to be held at Southern Illinois University Carbondale! LADY BLACKCATS FALL IN SUPERSECTIONAL The Goreville Lady Blackcats, after winning their 2nd straight IHSA Sectional Championship, were defeated in the IHSA Supersectional by Cowden-Herrick-Beecher City 57-46. The Lady Cats, who during the season won the Benton Invitational Tournament, the Black Diamond West Conference Title with a perfect 12-0 season in their first year in the conference, won their 3rd straight IHSA Regional and 2nd IHSA Sectional, end their season with the most wins of any Goreville team in history at 29-3. NATE WEBB SIGNS WITH SOUTHEASTERN ILLINOIS Goreville Blackcat standout Nate Webb, a senior this year, has signed a national letter of intent to play baseball next year at Southeastern Illinois College (SIC) in Harrisburg, IL on a full scholarship. SIC, an NJCAA Division I baseball program, is a member of the Great Rivers Athletic Conference. The 6’3” 185 lb. career starter, named Illinois Baseball Coaches Association All-Star as a junior, has helped lead Goreville to three Regional titles, 2 Sectional and Supersectional Titles (the school’s first in history), an IHSA State Runner-Up, and an IHSA State 3rd Place finish. He batted .347 last season as a junior and posted a 3.14 ERA as a pitcher for the Blackcats. Webb, a shortstop and pitcher for the Blackcats as well as the Marion American Legion Post 147, also is a 2 year starter on the Blackcat Basketball Team where he was named Special Mention All-State, Co-Captain 1st Team All-Conference, All-South, Classic All-Star and Lions Club All-Star. JR. BLACKCATS ARE 3RD IN STATE! The Jr. Blackcats Boys Basketball Team bounced back from their IJHSAA State Tournament semi-final loss to eventual state champion Aviston to soundly defeat Wayne City 60-24 to win 3rd Place at State! The Jr. Cats were met be the Goreville Police Department and escorted back to town where they were honored for their accomplishment with a parade and then introduced at half-time of the high school boys game against Sesser-Valier. The Jr. Cats. ranked #1 in their Regional, defeated Ziegler-Royalton and Cobden to win the IJHSAA Regional Championship then defeated Christopher in the opening round of the IJHSAA State Tournament held at Rend Lake College in Ina, IL. The Jr. Cats end the season at 24-4. Congratulations Jr. Blackcats!!! WE ARE PROUD OF YOU!!! |

In only their second year of fielding a varsity volleyball team, the Lady Blackcats are now Illinois High School Association Regional Champions! The Lady Cats defeated Shawnee in straight sets to claim their first ever Regional title. MILLER SIGNS WITH MURRAY STATE
Senior Goreville Lady Blackcat Shelbey Miller signed a national letter of intent to play softball next year at Murray State University in Murray, KY. The senior helped lead both the basketball and softball teams to their first ever "Elite Eight" appearances last year. Miller has been named to the softball All-State team her So. (3rd Team) and Jr.(2nd Team) years, All-South 3 years and first team All-Conference 3 years. Miller has an outstanding .473 batting Avg. for her career at Goreville High School. Miller has 140 total hits, 131 runs, 50 RBI and has only had 15 K’s in 3 years as the lead- off hitter for the Lady Blackcats. Miller was also named 3rd team All-State, All-South and 1st Team All-Conference in Basketball. She also maintains a 3.93 GPA and is ranked 6th in her class. WEBB AND PYLE NAMED ALL-SOUTH! Lady Blackcat volleyball players Junior Alison Webb and Senior Rhiannon Pyle have been named "All-South" by the Southern Illinois Coaches Association! Alison was a Black Diamond Conference 1st Team All-Conference selection and also was named All-Tournament at the Crab Orchard, Trico, and Thompsonville tournaments. She had 192 kills, 60 aces, 49 blocks and a 34% kill percentage. Rhiannon was a Black Diamond Conference 2nd Team selection and named All-Tournament at the Crab Orchard and Thompsonville tournaments. She had 133 digs and 48 aces. Alison and Rhiannon are the first Goreville volleyball players to be named All-South since the inception of the program. The Goreville FFA Chapter was recognized as a top 5 chapter in the State in the National Chapter Award program on stage at the State FFA Convention held in Springfield, IL in June. The National Chapter Award is an award area where chapters pick their top three activities within each of the three areas of the National Chapter Award application. Chapters perform these three activities and then compete to be named either a bronze, silver, or gold emblem chapter. Goreville FFA Chapter placed 1st overall in Section 24 and received the Illinois Bankers Plaque and then was ranked 4th overall in the State as well as 3rd Place in the State Heritage Activities. MARCHING BLACKCATS WIN 1ST AT SIU HOMECOMING PARADE!!! The Goreville Marching Blackcats Band won 1st Place Marching Band at the Southern Illinois University Homecoming Parade in Carbondale this past Saturday. BLACKCAT GOLF TEAM MAKES HISTORY - QUALIFIES FOR SECTIONALS!!! For the first time in the 8 year history since Goreville started its Golf program, the Blackcat Boys Golf Team has qualified for the Illinois High School Association Sectional Tournament! Scoring a school record 345, the Cats advanced and competed at Governors Run Golf Course in Carlyle, IL. Blackcat Junior J.T. Russell ranked 2nd out of 80 golfers by scoring a 74 and senior Colin Stone scored an 80 to come in 5th individually. 2011 BASS TEAM QUALIFIED FOR STATE! For the first time in the 3 years since the IHSA started the sport, the Goreville High School Bass Fishing Team qualified at the IHSA Sectional Tournament and competed in the Illinois High School Association State Bass Fishing Tournament held at Carlyle Lake! The team of Jake Hackman, J.T. Russell, and alternate Sean Seavers hauled in 14.19 pounds of fish at the IHSA Sectional Tournament held at Lake of Egypt - enough to qualify them for the State Tournament. The team of Mason Bishop, Shon Messmer, and alternate Connor Seavers brought in 12.98 pounds which qualified them as an alternate for the State Tournament in case one of the other 3 teams could not compete. The team finished 23rd at State out of 52 teams!

2011 LADY BLACKCATS END HISTORIC SEASON IN "ELITE 8" The Lady Blackcats again got out to an early 1-0 lead in the first only to see it erased quickly by the Cumberland-Toledo Lady Pirates in an 8-4 defeat. The Lady Pirates entered their third Supersectional in a row while this was Goreville's first appearance in the "Elite 8" in history - meaning the Lady Blackcats ended their historic 22-8 season as one of the top 8 teams in the State of Illinois!

2011 BLACKCATS WIN 3RD IN STATE!
The Blackcats, who just one year ago ended the year as the IHSA State Runner-Up losing in the Championship Game, lost the first game of the State series 2-1 to Lanark-Eastland but bounced back in a big way to beat Tremont 10-9 to claim 3rd in State! After winning their first ever IHSA Sectional and Supersectional Titles in 2010, the Cats were out to prove that they were not going out without a fight in their 2nd consecutive appearance at the State Tournament. Tremont held the lead most of the game until Blackcat Senior Lee Sopczak used a walk-off base hit to left to plate the winning run in the bottom of the seventh! Goreville proved yet again why the community and school are so special by bringing twice the number of fans than Tremont (15 miles from Peoria) to support the Cats at the O'Brien Field Baseball Complex in East Peoria. The Village even chartered a bus leaving at 4 AM to bring loyal Blackcat fans to the tournament. The Blackcats arrived back in town to a community parade down Broadway and a reception in their honor. Several Blackcat were at the school to celebrate ANOTHER STATE TROPHY!!! A very special thanks goes out to all who travelled to Peoria to support the Blackcats. It meant a great deal to the team to see so many Blackcat fans make the effort to travel across the state to show their support. Also, another special thanks to the Goreville Gazette for their tribute to the Baseball and Softball teams for their successful seasons. We appreciate your support!
