COACH HELTON AND COACH MESSMER NAMED IBCA 21 COACH OF THE YEAR 

After Coach Mike Helton led the Goreville High School Lady Blackcats Basketball Team to the SEC Tournament Championship, SEC Regular Season Championship, Eldorado Mid-Winter Classic Championship (first time in school history), a Regional Championship, and a 25-3 record that ties the best record in Goreville history, and Coach Eric Messmer led his Jr. Blackcats Boys Basketball Team to 2nd in State, SIC Conference Champs, SIC Tournament Champs, and a record tying 25-2 record, they were both named Illinois Basketball Coaches Association District 21 Coach of the Year in their category! They will be honored in a ceremony held in Bloominton, IL in April.

GOREVILLE HIGH SCHOOL PRESENTS "BYE BYE BIRDIE"

The Goreville High School spring drama production of " Bye Bye Birdie " will be performed March 19 and 20 at 7 PM in the High School Gym.  The musical tells the story of a rock and roll singer who is about to be inducted into the army.  The singer, Conrad Birdie, is played by Dylan Lyell.  Conrad's manager - Albert, played by Brody Whitehead, and his secretary - Rosie - played by Samantha Short - plan a publicity ploy to make them rich with one last hit from Conrad before he goes into the army.  The plan is to travel to Sweetapple Ohio and give "One Last Kiss" to sweet 15 year old Kim MacAfee played by Breanna Housewright.  The story takes a few turns as it gives an insight into the everyday life that is very much part of us all.  There are 39 high-school students involved in the musical and it is filled with comedy, song and lots of dancing.  Ticket prices are:  Advance- $6.00 At the Door- $8.00


BLACKCATS SEC REGULAR SEASON CHAMPIONS!

The Goreville High School Blackcats Boys Basketball Team defeated Egyptian on Senior Night to complete a perfect 7-0 record to win the South Egyptian Conference regular season championship!  In between games, all Goreville High School Student Athletes and their parents were honored for their dedication to Blackcat athletics.  In addition, the Jr. Blackcats and Jr. Lady Cats were all recognized for placing at the IJHSAA State Tournament this year and Coach Ned Ray was recognized for being inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame later this spring.  The Blackcats then entered the IHSA Regional where they defeated Shawnee amd Cobden before falling to Meridian in the Championship.  The Cats end their season at 22-8.

LADY BLACKCATS FALL AT SECTIONALS 

The Goreville High School Lady Blackcats tied the school record for wins in a season with their first IHSA Regional Championship since 2003.  They were then defeated by Cobden in the opening round of the sectionals.  The Lady Cats finish their season at 25-3.

JR. BLACKCATS 2ND IN STATE!! 

The Goreville Jr. Cats won the 2010 SIJHSAA Regional Tournament to earn a birth in the SIJHSAA Class M State Tournament where they beat other Regional Tournament winners New Athens in the first round and Cairo in the semi-finals.  The Jr. Cats fell to Nashville in the finals to claim 2nd Place in State! The Jr. Cats end the season 25-2.

All trivia proceeds benefit the Media Center

to purchase books for the 2011 Illinois Reading lists for K-12.

GOREVILLE HIGH SCHOOL 1ST ANNUAL SPELLING BEE

The first annual High School Spelling Bee was held Monday, Feb. 22 at 6:00 in the high school gym. The freshmen winners were: Jeri Maze-3rd, Jessica Wright-2nd, and Markella Patterson-1st. The sophomore winners were: Dustin Gunther-3rd, Chisum Kirby-2nd, Taylor Baker-1st. The junior winners were: Jodie Wright-3rd, Kasey Bishop-2nd, Patrick O'Steen-1st. The senior winners were: Dustin Childers-3rd, Lauren Jenkins-2nd, Adam Brenningmeyer-1st. Adam was also the Grand Champion for the evening, out-spelling Markella, Taylor, and Patrick.

GOREVILLE HIGH SCHOOL WINS REGIONAL ACADEMIC WYSE CHAMPIONSHIP!

On Feb. 4, 2010, the Goreville High School Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) Team won the Annual Regional Academic Competition held at Shawnee Community College! The Goreville High School team placed 1st in their division and 1st overall with a score of 494 out of 500.  There were 9 other high schools from the region participating.  Individual places were:  Chemistry - 2nd place  Miranda Stafford; Biology - 1st place Samantha Manier and 2nd place Cora Edmonds; Math - 1st place Ryan Reigstad and tie for 3rd place Brandon Potocki and Shayla Storey; Computers - 1st place Ryan Reigstad, 3rd place Tim Coffey; English - 3rd place Tim Coffey; Engineering Graphics - 1st place Linda Witt, 2nd place Lee Sopczak, and 3rd place Tim Cornwell.  The team now advances to the WYSE Sectional Competition on Mar. 9, 2010 at SIU in Carbondale.

CREWS WINS FFA SPEAKING COMPETITION 

Goreville High School Freshman Anna Clare Crews has won the Future Farmers of America Section 24  Creed Speaking Competition!  The event, held at Marion High School, consisted of 8 speakers from 12 different high schools across the region who must memorize the FFA Creed describing the heritage of American Agriculture and paying tribute to those progressive agriculturists that feed and clothe the world. At the end of each speech, the contestants are asked a series of questions concerning the content and meaning of the Creed.  Anna Clare now advances to the District Speaking Contest held at SIUC in April.

COACH RAY TO BE INDUCTED INTO HALL OF FAME! 

Coach Ned Ray has been selected by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association to be inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame!  In Coach Ray's 31 years as a Junior High Basketball Coach, of which 29 of those years were at Goreville, amassed a record of 479 wins and 280 losses.  His teams won 15 SIJHSAA Regional Championships and placed in the IJHSAA State Tournament 7 times with 3 second place and 4 fourth place finishes.  His teams also won 5 conference championships and 5 conference tournaments.  The induction will take place this summer in Bloomington.

JR. LADY BLACKCATS TAKE 4TH PLACE AT STATE!

The Jr. Lady Cats defeated Meridian in the first round of the SIJHSAA Class M State Tournament before falling to Pope County and Nashville.  For the fourth year in a row, the Goreville Jr. Lady Blackcats won the Regional Tournament and earned a birth in the Southern Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association (SIJHSAA) State Tournament!

GOREVILLE STUDENTS FEATURED IN ARTSTARTS PRODUCTION ! 

Goreville Elementary Students Christine Bryant and Gidget Wade along with Goreville High School student Melaine Wade have been selected to perform in the Artstarts production of "Oliver" on March 24-28!  Christine was selected to perform as "Lucy", a main character in the play as well as a member of "Fagan's Gang".  Gidget and Melaine will perform as Orphans/Townspeople in the play.  Artstarts is a Southern Illinois based, non-profit charitable organization devoted to making the "Arts" accessible to all Southern Illinois children.

Congratulations Christine, Gidget and Melaine and GOOD LUCK!!!


GOREVILLE FFA REFURBISHES SIGNS 

The Goreville FFA has been working to refurbish and light the entrance signs located at all of the major roads coming into the Village of Goreville.  The project is a cooperative effort between the school, city, Heartland Lawncare, Illinois Department of Transportation, Brown Electric, and local property owners where the signs are located.

"ALL KIDS" INSURANCE PROGRAM

The All Kids program is a program started in 2006 that offers Illinois' uninsured children comprehensive health care that includes doctor's visits, hospital stays, prescription drugs, vision care, dental care and medical devices like eyeglasses and asthma inhalers.
