GOREVILLE HIGH SCHOOL WINS REGIONAL ACADEMIC WYSE CHAMPIONSHIP!
On Feb. 4, 2010, the Goreville High School Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) Team won the Annual Regional Academic Competition held at Shawnee Community College! The Goreville High School team placed 1st in their division and 1st overall with a score of 494 out of 500. There were 9 other high schools from the region participating. Individual places were:
Chemistry - 2nd place Miranda Stafford;
Biology - 1st place Samantha Manier and 2nd place Cora Edmonds;
Math - 1st place Ryan Reigstad and tie for 3rd place Brandon Potocki and Shayla Storey;
Computers - 1st place Ryan Reigstad, 3rd place Tim Coffey;
English - 3rd place Tim Coffey;
Engineering Graphics - 1st place Linda Witt, 2nd place Lee Sopczak, and 3rd place Tim Cornwell.
The team now advances to the WYSE Sectional Competition on Mar. 9, 2010 at SIU in Carbondale.

LADY BLACKCATS SEC TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS! The Goreville High School Lady Blackcats Basketball Team defeated Dongola, Shawnee, then Cobden to claim the South Egyptian Conference Tournament Title! Sophomore Shelbey Miller and Freshman Alison Webb were named to the SEC All-Tournament Team. The Lady Blackcats are now 21-2 and ranked 4th in Southern Illinois. Congratulations Lady Cats!!! |
JR. BLACKCATS STATE BOUND!! The Goreville Jr. Blackcats Boys Basketball Team has won the 2010 SIJHSAA Regional Tournament and earns a birth in the SIJHSAA Class M State Tournament held at Rend Lake College in Ina! The #1 seed Jr. Cats beat Unity Point and then Jonesboro in the championship game to claim first place! Congratulations Goreville Jr. Blackcats and GOOD LUCK AT STATE!!!

JR. LADY BLACKCATS TAKE 4TH PLACE AT STATE! The Jr. Lady Cats defeated Meridian in the first round of the SIJHSAA Class M State Tournament before falling to Pope County and Nashville. For the fourth year in a row, the Goreville Jr. Lady Blackcats won the Regional Tournament and earned a birth in the Southern Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association (SIJHSAA) State Tournament! Congratulations Jr. Lady Cats on a GREAT SEASON!!!

For the first time in the twenty year history of playing in the Eldorado Mid-Winter Invitational Tournament, the Goreville Lady Blackcat Basketall Team has won the championship! The Lady Cats defeated Pope County, host Eldorado, Mt. Carmel, and then Vienna to take the title. Shelbey Miller and Cayla Harner were both named to the All-Tournament Team and Shelbey was named the Tournament MVP! Congratulations Lady Cats!!! |
SHADOWENS SIGNS TO PLAY BASEBALL AT SIC Senior Goreville Blackcat Tyler Shadowens has signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball next year at Southeastern Illinois Junior College in Harrisburg. Shadowens will sign as a catcher and infielder for the Falcons. Shadowens has helped lead the Blackcats to three Regional titles. Including the fall season, Shadowens has played in 142 games for the Blackcats since his freshman year. With a career batting average of .355, Shadowens also has 115 RBI, 139 Hits, 129 Runs and 12 HR. While being a consistent player, Shadowens' best season came last spring when he hit .482 with 32 RBI and was named First Team All-Conference in the South Egyptian Conference and he named All-South as a junior. "Tyler is a hard worker and will do whatever it takes for his team to win," said Goreville Head Coach Shawn Tripp. "I believe he will be a great addition to the S.I.C. program and will have much success." Tyler is the son of Clay and Tonia Shadowens. Congratulations Tyler!!! |
JOHNSON COUNTY BASKETBALL UNDERWAY! The Johnson County Youth League (JCYL) has kicked off the 2010 basketball season with an all-day event at Goreville Elementary School. Nine games were held on January 9 for 1st through 4th graders throughout Johnson County. For more information on how you can get your child involved, call 995-2142. |
COACH RAY TO BE INDUCTED INTO HALL OF FAME! Coach Ned Ray has been selected by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association to be inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame! In Coach Ray's 31 years as a Junior High Basketball Coach, of which 29 of those years were at Goreville, amassed a record of 479 wins and 280 losses. His teams won 15 SIJHSAA Regional Championships and placed in the IJHSAA State Tournament 7 times with 3 second place and 4 fourth place finishes. His teams also won 5 conference championships and 5 conference tournaments. The induction will take place this summer in Bloomington. Congratulations Coach Ray!!! |

GOREVILLE STUDENTS FEATURED IN ARTSTARTS PRODUCTION ! Goreville Elementary Students Christine Bryant and Gidget Wade along with Goreville High School student Melaine Wade have been selected to perform in the Artstarts production of "Oliver" on March 24-28! Christine was selected to perform as "Lucy", a main character in the play as well as a member of "Fagan's Gang". Gidget and Melaine will perform as Orphans/Townspeople in the play. Artstarts is a Southern Illinois based, non-profit charitable organization devoted to making the "Arts" accessible to all Southern Illinois children. Congratulations Christine, Gidget and Melaine and GOOD LUCK!!! |
GOREVILLE FFA REFURBISHES SIGNS The Goreville FFA has been working to refurbish and light the entrance signs located at all of the major roads coming into the Village of Goreville. The project is a cooperative effort between the school, city, Heartland Lawncare, Illinois Department of Transportation, Brown Electric, and local property owners where the signs are located. GOREVILLE BLACKCAT ATHLETICS ADDS FOOTBALL AND VOLLEYBALL!!! For the first time in the history of Goreville High School, football and volleyball will be offered as a sport to Goreville High School students in 2009-2010! After five years of planning and negotiations, the Goreville Board of Education approved a cooperative agreement with Vienna High School to allow our students to participate in their new football program. They also approved starting Volleyball as a Junior Varsity Program in 2009-2010 and then a full program with a Varsity in 2010-2011.
